Why we started True Photo Talk

As I said above, it started with a random post I put on Facebook, “Photography is losing it’s value as ART & just becoming a commodity, in turn, losing it’s value. People, have pride in your industry.” After the 85 comments and direct messages, here we are. Also, the other reason as Kelly Segre posted, that at this years WPPI Print competition, there was no Fine Art Category in which to enter some of her prints, they didn’t fall into other portrait categories. After this and many other long conversations with photographers I know, I decided to start this blog as a place that we will post images, stories, links, and interviews with photographers I know and respect, and some from others who are also respected and admired due to their conviction to keeping photography as an ART.

As we know, there many more photography fields other then weddings. Fine art, commercial, editorial, fashion, industrial, photojournalism, and many more. So let’s be real here. Let’s keep the focus on what we know that the masters of our industry worked really hard to make photography acceptable as art. I’m sure this week with my visit to WPPI I will have many conversations that will give us more ideas to grow this venture together, you and I.

Also, just something quick for those who visit this site, here is a world renown photographer that I was fortunate enough to assist on occasion when he would come to Miami, Helmut Newton. This is to open the mind to some of you who have never heard of him, or other GREATS we plan on talking about here. How many photographers you know have their own museum.

And one of his most famous images

I love the idea for this blog Carlos, and can’t wait to see what kind of things you have planned for it!

This is awesome!… I can’t wait to be a part of this… we all need to be pushed outside our comfort zones in order to grow and keep the art alive… and how better than to look at the masters before us who pushed outside theirs!! Thanks!

What a great idea for a blog! I look forward to reading future posts! To this day I am sorry I was never able to take a photography class at my university, but I look forward to learning from the wonderful photographers who are so willing to share.

Yeah Carlos! Well…..to be honest there are some valuable things that I have learned in the beginning of my business from a lot of the “popular” photographers that had a workshop. However, at this point I appreciate more and more the ART in photography, giving my clients the attention that they need and truly studying what is involved in actually being a GOOD photographer. Some of the many lectures I go have gone to, like I said I did get something out of, yet I’m not seeing those people even holding a camera? So perhaps if they are motivational speakers…great, but to continue to proclaim how to make it big in the photography business, I guess they should be a photographer? Just a thought! But thank you for sharing this forum, for being honest, and a true “photographer” with amazing inspiration! XXOO

you are..amazing. thank you for starting this much needed forum of discussion!

Alicia Stepp-Woody - March 26, 2010 - 11:24 am

I LOVEEE Helmut Newton’s work!!!
So amazing that you got the chance to assist him!

I think we can blame a lot of the bandwagon-ing (I know that’s probably not a word, haha) on the digital age and the new ease and speed of information we have access to. I do feel like photography is at risk of losing it’s place as an art form due to the Uncle Bobs and GWCs that instead of using the camera as a vehicle to create art, use it as a platform to simply make money or exploit women. I also think our industry due in great part to the aforementioned people have done a great disservice and brough down the collective bar by making the end product a homogenzied commodity, instead of a work of art. I think it’s also why the public doesn’t take photography as seriously anymore. As if it’s become a gimmick, something to sell on the shelves of some hip store with a tween demographic.

The best we can do is to continue doing what we love and pray that people will continue to appreciate the art and respect the art as well as the forefathers of photography that brought us to this point.

I included the link (above) to my fashion site vs my weddings site, because … well, you know why. ;-)

Thanks Carlos for bringing the focus back to art…

I want to push my self as an artist constantly and avoid the pitfalls of the industry like following the trends…. which kill true creativity.

I hope WPPI rethinks the inclusion of a fine art category next year.

Wow. This is terrific. We are certainly seeing rapid change. It is a time when we really need to be saying to ourselves every day “if I were starting my business today what would it look like and where would I focus”. Honetly requires that we all look at something very important- what does the consumer want and expect? There will always be a place for professional photography. We need to be looking at what the consumer’s expectation is relating to pricing, service and quality in this age of digital. I have known many of you for over 15 years ;as we started GNP Frame the same time as many of you started in photography. As long as we listen to our customers and embrace change, there will be business..
